Adaptive & Whisker Labs bring real-time data to outage insurance
Adaptive Insurance and Whisker Labs have announced a partnership to integrate real-time grid intelligence into power outage insurance for businesses across the United States.
The integration sees Whisker Labs' Ting Insights added to Adaptive's flagship parametric insurance product, GridProtect, allowing insurance claims to be triggered, verified, and paid using live grid data. The companies state this enables more accurate and rapid insurance responses following power outages, reducing disputes over claim eligibility and payout timelines.
Pinpointing outage events
GridProtect is designed specifically for businesses reliant on continuous power supply. It provides coverage for interruptions lasting less than twenty-four hours. The solution is powered by Ting Insights, a network of more than one million artificial intelligence-enabled sensors that monitor the health of the US electrical grid, delivering real-time intelligence about grid faults and outages.
With this integration, Adaptive and Whisker Labs deliver coverage based on hyper-local, verified data, allowing for automated assessment of incidents and faster claims handling for affected businesses. The companies cite the limitations of traditional sources, such as utility feeds and crowd-sourced alerts, which are often either delayed or lack sufficient granularity to support timely decisions.
Arik Yelovitch, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder of Adaptive Insurance, said:
"By leveraging real-time, hyper-local power outage data from Ting Insights, we can deliver speedier financial support to businesses when they need it most. But our customers don't just want insurance. They want to know it works when it matters. Ting Insights helps us deliver on that promise with better data, fewer disputes, and the kind of confidence that only comes from seeing the grid clearly, in real time."
Responding to grid realities
The organisations emphasise the increasing significance of reliable outage detection as extreme weather events become more common and infrastructure ages. According to the companies, the new offering ensures each insured location is monitored on a continuous basis, with incidents of power loss instantly relayed to Adaptive. This triggers pre-agreed payouts without requiring customers to take further action, a process the companies believe improves recovery times for businesses during disruptive periods.
Bob Marshall, Chief Executive Officer of Whisker Labs, said:
"Better data is good for everyone. With Ting Insights, we bring clarity where it's most needed - when the grid is struggling to deliver safe, reliable power. Adaptive is now using that intelligence to create a far better experience for customers who need fast, fair coverage when the power goes out."
Parametric insurance model
The parametric insurance model employed by Adaptive bases payouts on predefined criteria - such as the occurrence and duration of outages - measured by trusted third-party data, rather than conventional loss assessment methods. This approach aims to simplify and speed up the claims process, with the goal of providing coverage where other insurance options may not be available or might be slow to respond.
Adaptive Insurance operates a platform that uses artificial intelligence to provide US businesses with resilience against climate- and weather-related risks. The company sees a gap in traditional insurance for certain extreme events and advocates for parametric solutions that offer predictability and simplicity.
Whisker Labs, meanwhile, develops AI-driven sensor technology intended for preventing electrical fires and monitoring grid performance. Through the Ting network, individual sensors monitor electrical faults at the home or business level, while aggregated data from the network informs broader grid reliability and safety intelligence, now accessible via Ting Insights.
The companies state that the collaboration establishes a data-driven standard for outage insurance, aligning claims processes more closely with on-the-ground realities and advancing transparency for business-interruption cover in the US market.
