Fold has chosen Lead Bank as its new banking partner, a move that supports its financial services platform as it expands its account offering.

Under the agreement, Lead Bank will support Fold's accounts, deposits, withdrawals and bitcoin trading, strengthening the banking infrastructure behind the Nasdaq-listed company's consumer products.

Fold describes itself as a bitcoin financial services company focused on helping users earn, save and spend bitcoin through everyday financial tools. The new arrangement is intended to support a broader range of account functions and additional products within the Fold app.

Planned features, to be introduced in phases, include account and routing numbers, ACH transfers, same-day ACH deposits, direct deposit with early access to funds, Fedwire and FedNow transfers, and higher deposit and withdrawal limits. Fold also plans to add bitcoin purchase features, including instant buys funded from Fold balances and recurring purchases from external bank accounts.

The deal gives Fold a new core banking relationship at a time when digital asset firms in the US continue to seek stable banking partners. Access to deposit accounts, payment rails and money movement tools remains a central issue for crypto-linked consumer platforms trying to build broader financial products around digital assets.

Fold expects to begin moving customer accounts to Lead Bank later this year and said it will manage the transition with a focus on minimising disruption for users.

Will Reeves, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Fold, described the tie-up as a key step in the company's development.

"This marks an important step forward in Fold's evolution as a full-featured financial services platform," Reeves said. "Fold has always worked to make bitcoin part of how people manage money day to day. With Lead Bank as our banking partner, we're better positioned to keep building products that bring bitcoin into everyday life."

Lead Bank will underpin a wider set of products Fold has been assembling in recent months. The company pointed to the rollout of its Fold Bitcoin Credit Card as a separate initiative and noted that the card is not part of the Lead Bank partnership.

Fold also referred to recent capital transactions aimed at strengthening its ability to expand both consumer and business-focused platforms. It did not disclose financial terms for the banking agreement, which forms part of a broader effort to build services beyond basic bitcoin rewards and card-linked products.

Banking layer

Lead Bank is a state-chartered bank that provides banking infrastructure to fintech and digital asset companies, alongside business and personal banking services in the US. For companies such as Fold, a relationship with a regulated bank can provide access to the payment networks and account services needed to run mainstream financial products.

The bank's role in supporting deposits, withdrawals and trading activity points to a deeper operational link than a simple referral or payments arrangement. It also reflects a model increasingly used by fintech and crypto-adjacent businesses, which rely on partner banks to provide the regulated account framework behind branded apps.

Jake Mendel, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Lead, said the bank views Fold as an early mover in applying bitcoin to daily financial activity.

"Fold has been a pioneer in making bitcoin accessible and useful in day-to-day financial services. Lead's embedded banking infrastructure, combined with the digital asset expertise of our teams, makes for a strong partnership that supports Fold's impressive pace of innovation," Mendel said.

His comments highlight how banks serving fintech clients continue to assess digital asset businesses on a case-by-case basis, particularly those tied to consumer payments and savings products rather than speculative trading alone.

Product buildout

The feature list outlined by Fold suggests the company wants to move closer to a fuller banking-style experience within its app while keeping bitcoin at the centre of the proposition. Direct deposit, external transfers and instant withdrawals would allow customers to use the platform more like a primary financial account rather than a narrow crypto add-on.

That matters because customer retention in digital finance often depends on frequency of use. Products tied to salary payments, routine transfers and everyday balances can create stronger engagement than standalone crypto trading tools.

Reeves said the rollout would be measured.

"Our priority is to introduce new capabilities thoughtfully while continuing to improve the Fold experience for customers," Reeves said. "As we move into this next phase, we remain focused on building products that bring bitcoin to the everyday person."

Mendel added: "Lead is thrilled to support Fold's continued growth by providing the underlying infrastructure that powers the core Fold experience."
