6Wresearch says the global data centre market will reach USD $645 billion by 2032, up from USD $321 billion, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 6.51% from 2026 to 2032.

The projection points to sustained spending on facilities, computing equipment and infrastructure upgrades as businesses expand cloud use and integrate artificial intelligence into core processes. Demand for data storage, processing and reliable digital infrastructure is also rising alongside wider use of online services.

Operators and suppliers are responding to heavier, more complex workloads by modernising infrastructure to improve capacity use, energy efficiency and operational flexibility, while expanding support for cloud platforms, AI systems and other data-intensive applications.

Sector demand

Healthcare, banking and retail are among the sectors driving demand as they process larger volumes of information, support digital transactions and seek uninterrupted service delivery. The shift of business operations to digital platforms is also increasing the need for scalable infrastructure that can handle growing data volumes and more demanding applications.

Edge computing and the Internet of Things are creating another layer of investment demand, prompting the construction of more distributed data centre infrastructure to support connected devices and applications that require low-latency processing.

Large data centres remained the biggest part of the market in 2025, accounting for nearly 42% of global revenue, according to the study. Mega data centres are expected to record the fastest growth over the forecast period, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 9.1% between 2026 and 2032, reflecting demand for high-capacity sites linked to hyperscale cloud services and AI workloads.

Regional split

North America held almost 50% of the global market in 2025, supported by a well-established technology sector and mature digital infrastructure. Asia is forecast to grow faster, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 8.4% from 2026 to 2032, driven by digitalisation, wider cloud adoption and infrastructure development across regional economies.

The report also points to changing customer preferences on facility reliability. While Tier 1 and Tier 2 sites have historically been widely used, demand is shifting towards infrastructure with higher availability and stronger operational resilience.

Tier 4 data centres are expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 8.8% by 2032 as organisations seek to reduce the risk of service disruption and support continuous digital operations. The trend reflects businesses' growing dependence on always-on systems for customer services, transactions and internal processes.

Cost and power

Despite the growth outlook, operators face constraints that could shape how quickly new capacity comes online. The study identifies power access, rising operating costs, environmental pressure, regulatory compliance and technology upgrades as key structural challenges for the industry.

To address those issues, companies are turning to more efficient equipment, renewable energy and new cooling methods. The report highlights airflow management measures such as hot and cold aisle optimisation as a way to improve cooling efficiency and cut energy use, while noting that cooler climates can reduce cooling demand in some locations.

Balancing computing performance, operating costs and sustainability is becoming a central issue as more workloads shift into data centres. For operators, that means expanding capacity while tightening energy management and limiting environmental effects.

Major players identified in the market include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, IBM and Equinix. Continued enterprise migration to cloud platforms and broader AI deployment are expected to increase the importance of scalable, reliable and resource-efficient data centre solutions.

6Wresearch said: "Market participants are focusing on expanding facilities, advanced computing equipment, and infrastructure modernization to accommodate shifting workloads. These developments are expected to support market growth at the same time encouraging innovations in operational efficiency, reliability, and performance."
