Scribenote launches free AI scribe to fight vet burnout

Today

Scribenote has introduced a free artificial intelligence-powered scribe service for veterinary professionals, removing cost as a barrier to adoption and aiming to address the growing issue of burnout in veterinary clinics.

The company, which has recently tripled its user base over the past year, now offers the Free Plan to allow veterinary practices access to AI-generated medical record creation, with the intent of saving practitioners significant time on administrative tasks. This development comes as the sector faces ongoing staffing shortages and increased workloads, with traditional practice management systems often demanding lengthy manual data entry by veterinary professionals.

Industry challenges

The veterinary profession has long been associated with high levels of burnout, with many professionals spending hours outside of standard appointments completing paperwork. The company's new free tier of AI-powered documentation seeks to ease this burden by providing automated note-taking features. Scribenote states that its platform converts spoken words directly into structured SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) notes in seconds, streamlining the record-keeping process and cutting down on post-appointment documentation time.

Ryan Gallagher, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Scribenote, commented on the challenges that many in the profession routinely face:

"Veterinarians didn't choose this profession to drown in paperwork. They chose it to heal, to help, to connect. Documentation used to be a big part of the job, but we changed that. Vets using Scribenote are seeing more patients, spending less time on admin, and actually enjoying their work again. So we asked ourselves: why should any veterinarian be denied this because of budget constraints?"

Key features and access

The Free Plan includes unlimited AI-generated medical records using Scribenote's default templates and offers team-wide collaboration through the Teams Mode. Users also have access to self-serve help documentation and AI-powered chat support. Certain functions, including custom templates, client summaries, multilingual support, an AI writing assistant, and human customer support remain available through the paid Pro tier. All new signups receive a two-week free trial of the Pro plan before defaulting to the free version.

The timing reflects changing industry economics and increasing AI adoption. Since raising USD $8.2 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz in mid-2024, Scribenote reports that its platform now supports thousands of clinics across North America, and it has recently completed what it describes as the largest enterprise rollout of AI scribing software in veterinary medicine to date.

Scribenote's move to a free pricing model mirrors broader trends in AI software, where improved model efficiency is driving down costs and enabling companies to offer sophisticated capabilities as standard. The aim is to secure widespread adoption at a time when, according to the company, 44 competing AI scribe solutions have entered the market in the past year.

Gallagher added:

"Veterinary professionals are overwhelmed, and cost should never be a barrier to getting home on time. AI is becoming smarter and more affordable. We want to pass those savings on to the people who need it most."

Origins and future plans

Scribenote was originally developed as a tool to assist Gallagher's sister, who is a veterinarian, and has since expanded into a platform dedicated to medical records automation. The company's technology enables the recording of conversations between veterinarians and clients, generating accurate medical records within minutes.

The latest rollout follows a strategic price reduction earlier in the year and is viewed by the company as a catalyst for further adoption of AI-assisted documentation within the sector. In addition to current offerings, Scribenote is planning to introduce a second product aimed at veterinary clinics later in the year, though specific details have not yet been disclosed.

Veterinary practices can now access the free service, which the company hopes will help practitioners spend less time on paperwork and more time providing care to their animal patients.
