Sound Devices launches Astral Mini Plus wireless transmitter
Sound Devices has launched the Astral Mini Plus wireless transmitter, expanding its compact bodypack range for sound professionals.
The new model adds more than eight hours of battery life, a 169-1525 MHz tuning range, IP67 water resistance and several usability updates intended to speed setup and operation. It follows the original Astral Mini and keeps the same compact bodypack format.
Sound Devices is targeting the unit at location sound, live music and theatre, where operators often need compact transmitters that can run through long sessions and adapt to changing conditions. It is designed for demanding production environments, including long show days, rehearsals and back-to-back scenes.
Battery focus
A key change is runtime. The Astral Mini Plus is designed to work with the XL-B14500 rechargeable cell and can operate for up to eight hours before needing a recharge or battery swap.
The transmitter can also be topped up through USB-C, giving crews another charging option between takes, rehearsals or performances. Longer battery life is a practical concern for production teams, especially in theatre and live events, where access to body-worn transmitters can be limited once a performance is under way.
Wider range
The device also extends tuning flexibility by using Sound Devices' SpectraBand technology across 169-1525 MHz. That range is intended to help users identify legal and usable spectrum in different regions.
This is particularly relevant for touring productions and international work, where spectrum availability can vary sharply from one market to another. A broader tuning range can reduce the need to maintain different equipment configurations for different territories, although actual operation still depends on local rules.
The transmitter is designed to operate across regions with differing spectrum regulations. This places it in a part of the wireless audio market where buyers increasingly weigh flexibility and compliance alongside audio performance.
Weather protection
Another update is environmental protection. The Astral Mini Plus carries an IP67 water resistance rating intended to protect it from sweat, humidity and other moisture.
For theatre performers, broadcast contributors and location crews, water resistance can be significant because bodypack transmitters are routinely exposed to heat, perspiration and outdoor conditions. Moisture-related equipment failures can disrupt production and increase replacement costs, making durability a selling point in this segment.
Workflow changes
The company has also added an ePaper display and several usability features to reduce setup times and make adjustments easier during operation. The unit continues to use GainForward technology, which lets mixers manage gain staging without adjusting the transmitter itself.
That workflow will be familiar to users of other products in the Astral wireless line. In practice, it reduces the need to access talent-worn packs once they are fitted, which can be especially useful during fast-moving productions or live stage work.
Sound Devices has built its reputation in professional audio on recorders, mixers, and wireless systems used in film, television, and live sound. Its products are used in feature films, television programmes, live events, houses of worship and education settings.
The launch also reflects how wireless audio manufacturers continue to refine existing product lines rather than rely solely on major redesigns. Incremental changes such as longer runtime, broader tuning coverage and tougher housings often address the day-to-day operational concerns of crews more directly than headline changes in form factor.
Competition in compact wireless systems remains focused on reliability, spectrum flexibility and ease of use, particularly as users face more crowded RF environments and tighter production schedules. In bodypack transmitters, demand from theatre and live performance has also shaped the market, with users looking for packs that are small, discreet and resilient.
According to Sound Devices, the Mini Plus was developed in response to requests from live sound and theatre professionals. That suggests the company is seeking to deepen its position in those sectors while retaining appeal for film and location audio users.
"Astral Mini Plus is an exciting step forward for compact live wireless transmitter technology - offering better performance, more RF and gain staging flexibility, and longer battery life," said Matt Anderson, Chief Executive Officer, Sound Devices.
"We're incredibly proud to build upon the legacy of the original while also offering some much-requested upgrades that make it even more effective for live theater productions in addition to extended production sound and live use," Anderson added.
