VDURA backs New Mexico State University research platform

VDURA has completed a data platform deployment for New Mexico State University, and the system is now in full production for the university's research community.

The installation extends an existing partnership between the two organisations on post-quantum cryptography work related to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

The platform now underpins high-performance computing within NMSU's Research Cores Program, which brings together shared research facilities, instrumentation and computing resources. It is intended to support workloads including AI model training, large-scale simulation and other data-intensive research activity.

NMSU is one of America's newer Carnegie R1 institutions, a classification reserved for universities with very high research activity. The university reports more than USD $141 million in annual research spending across fields including aerospace, agriculture, cybersecurity, water science and biomedical research.

The deployment combines NVMe flash storage with high-density hard disk capacity in a single environment on the university's InfiniBand fabric. According to the companies, this allows active research data to sit alongside larger volumes of lower-cost capacity within one namespace.

VDURA said the system uses a software-defined architecture delivered through a subscription model, allowing the university to add capacity and performance over time as research demand changes.

The installation adds a production system to a relationship first disclosed last year, when VDURA and NMSU agreed to work together on post-quantum cryptographic technology for large data pipelines used in AI and high-performance computing. With the new platform now live, the university is running research workloads on the same architecture at the centre of that collaboration.

That link matters because research institutions are under pressure to manage rising volumes of scientific data while serving increasingly compute-heavy workloads. Universities are also looking for ways to support AI research without building separate storage estates for training data, simulation output and long-term retention.

For NMSU, the system is part of a broader push to support research growth following its move into the R1 tier. The university serves more than 21,000 students and has research programmes spanning cybersecurity, advanced materials, agriculture and aerospace.
