Wistron opens Texas plant to make Nvidia superchips

Wistron has opened its first US manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, where it will produce Nvidia superchips.

The 324,000-square-foot greenfield site, known as the D1 facility, is focused on systems used in artificial intelligence infrastructure. It currently runs two manufacturing cells: one produces the Nvidia GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra Superchip, while the other is set to produce the Nvidia Vera Rubin Superchip.

The opening marks a significant step in the Taiwanese manufacturer's US expansion as technology groups push to deepen domestic production of AI hardware. Nvidia founder and Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang appeared at the ceremony alongside Wistron Chairman Simon Lin, as well as local and Taiwanese officials.

The plant represents a USD 700 million investment in advanced manufacturing in the US. It has created more than 500 jobs in Texas, and Wistron plans to raise that figure to 1,000 by the end of the year.

The Fort Worth operation is expected to scale up this year to produce tens of thousands of boards each month. The boards are central to high-end AI systems, where demand has risen sharply as cloud providers, start-ups and large companies expand their computing infrastructure.

Huang used the event to link the facility to a broader effort to rebuild US industrial capacity around semiconductors and computing systems.

"Manufacturing is an essential pillar for every economy and every country," said Jensen Huang, Chief Executive Officer, Nvidia.

"Building chip plants, packaging plants, computer system plants like this, and AI factories all over the United States has allowed the United States to really reindustrialize for the first time in a long time," Huang said.

Factory design

Before construction began, Wistron designed and simulated the entire facility as a digital twin using Nvidia software and models. That process allowed engineers to test assembly line layouts, refine production processes and train workers on standard operating procedures before systems were installed at the plant.

The approach reflects manufacturers' efforts to shorten the path from factory planning to output, particularly in sectors where production lines must adapt quickly to changing product designs. AI hardware is one of the clearest examples of that pressure, with chip and system makers racing to meet demand while navigating rapid generational changes in product architecture.

Nvidia has said it aims to manufacture up to USD 500 billion in advanced AI platforms in the US. The Fort Worth site is part of that broader production push, alongside other projects intended to expand domestic supply chains for semiconductors, optics and server systems.

Lin framed the investment as part of a broader shift in how AI production connects global technology demand with local industry and labour markets.

"From the macro view of the whole AI world, down to community and country - it's a great vision," said Simon Lin, Chairman, Wistron.

"I think we're going to enjoy the next era of AI life. I hope that we will be happier and healthier," Lin said.

Scale and demand

The launch ceremony included the unveiling of the first Nvidia GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra Superchip produced at the site. Huang described the system built around that product as "the most powerful AI supercomputer in the world."

The comments underscored the complexity and value of the systems now being assembled in US plants as AI infrastructure shifts from specialist equipment to large-scale industrial output. That change is reshaping the economics of hardware manufacturing in regions able to offer land, labour and logistics for large facilities.

Huang also pointed to the range of occupations tied to a project of this size, from construction trades to factory jobs.

"It's creating jobs in plumbing, construction, manufacturing and electricians," Huang said.

"So many different types of jobs here in the United States," he said.

He also drew a parallel between AI infrastructure and older forms of national infrastructure, arguing that AI factories will become a basic layer of economic activity.

"Just as agriculture is a fundamental infrastructure of society, in the future these AI factories will be a fundamental infrastructure of society," Huang said.

"Today we have roads and agriculture and railroads. In the future we'll have AI factories and the internet. Electricity comes in ... and the tokens get generated in the factories," he said.

Later, Huang described the physical scale of the machines being assembled in Fort Worth and the level of output Wistron is targeting.

"It has one-and-a-half million parts inside - two tons, 4 million dollars - and we're producing them like phones, right here in Wistron, cranking them out in volume because the world needs all of these machines to drive the intelligence infrastructure," Huang said.
