Wavelo unveils solution to unlock legacy telecom data for AI
Wavelo has introduced its "Free Your Data" solution, designed to help communications service providers access and use data held within legacy systems for AI applications.
The new offering aims to address a longstanding issue in the telecommunications industry, where critical customer and network data remains inaccessible, trapped in outdated business and operational support systems (BSS/OSS). These inaccessible repositories have been widely recognised as a barrier to the widespread adoption of AI across the sector.
Unlocking legacy data
According to Wavelo, the "Free Your Data" solution captures previously latent data from legacy systems and converts static application programming interfaces (APIs) into real-time event streams. This method enables operators to begin harnessing the value of their data immediately, supporting AI-driven productivity, automation, and service delivery without replacing existing systems.
Justin Reilly, Chief Executive Officer of Wavelo, commented on the current challenges faced by the industry. He stated,
"We've been hearing the same story across the industry. AI initiatives are stalling because CSPs can't feed large volumes of contextual data into AI platforms in real time. With AI now central to productivity and innovation, Wavelo is laser-focused on solving this problem. This is crucial for the industry, as those who can harness their data for AI will gain a significant competitive edge in customer experience and operational efficiency."
The architecture underpinning "Free Your Data" is described by the company as system-agnostic and event-driven. This approach is designed to allow seamless translation of legacy system data into formats suitable for modern AI and analytics, without requiring service providers to undertake disruptive or costly system overhauls.
Industry perspective
John Abraham, Principal Analyst at Appledore Research, offered his perspective on the solution's potential impact in the market. He said,
"Telecom's AI transformation has been hampered by a fundamental infrastructure challenge. Decades-old BSS/OSS systems were built for operational efficiency, not data accessibility. As CSPs urgently seek ways to scale their AI initiatives, the timing is ideal for solutions that can unlock this trapped data without requiring costly system overhauls or disrupting critical operations. Data extraction capabilities represent a critical enabler for operators who need to feed AI platforms with real-time data streams while minimising operational risk."
Wavelo previously showcased "Free Your Data" as part of a large-scale telecommunications initiative focused on the Internet of Moving Things (IoMT). The demonstration highlighted the solution's capacity to operate as an "event-streaming connective tissue" within complex, multi-vendor environments by enabling real-time orchestration and data availability.
Modernisation at the operator's pace
The solution is positioned to allow communications service providers to modernise their operations at their own pace, without needing to replace critical systems that underpin their current networks. Wavelo states that "Free Your Data" provides an option for operators to achieve AI-readiness and increased flexibility in how they pursue innovation and automation.
"Free Your Data" is designed to ensure that CSPs can extract and activate untapped data from across their networks and business operations, empowering them to respond to the increasing demands placed upon telecom by emerging AI technology.
The company asserts that providing access to trapped data will enable new service launches and operational improvements, supporting a transition for operators seeking to engage fully with AI-driven business strategies.
The telecom sector continues to face challenges associated with fragmented legacy infrastructure and high integration costs. Solutions such as "Free Your Data" may play a role in enabling operators to advance digital initiatives while minimising the risks typically associated with significant technology migrations.
Wavelo will continue to demonstrate the capabilities of its solution at upcoming industry events as part of its ongoing strategy to promote greater adoption of AI and data accessibility in telecommunications.
